Reconstruction and Development of Afghanistan

A meeting of the Steering Committee on Regional Cooperation (SCRC) is in progress. The first meeting of the SCRC took place in the Afghanistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 25 February 2007. The Meeting was jointly chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E Dr Rangin Dafdar Spanta and Chief Economic Advisor to the President Prof Ishaq Naderi. The main purpose of SCRC is to further institutionalize regional cooperation within the government Ministries and agencies, with regional countries, with the donor community and with the multilateral organizations. .

SAARC Technical Committee on Transport Adopts Report

The second meeting of Technical Committee on Transport of Saarc Countries adopted its report here on Wednesday to be presented in the meeting of Inter-Governmental Expert Group of Transport being held on Thursday for further consideration.

Representatives from Saarc countries from the fields of Civil Aviation, road transport, Railways and Port and Shipping attended the meeting.

The Saarc Transport Ministers meeting will be held on Friday to discuss improving connectivity among the Saarc countries for promoting relations at different levels.

The Technical Committee meeting attended by representatives of Saarc countries discussed matters relating to Saarc Regional Multimodal Transport Study, linking of Saarc capitals by air, harmonization of standards in transport sector and networking of transport research institutes.

It also reviewed progress in implementation of the recommendations contained in the report of the first meeting of the Technical Committee on Transport held on January 17-18, 2005.

The Inter-Governmental Expert group will meet on Thursday to further discuss the report of the Technical Committee and present its report to the Saarc Transport Ministers¢ meeting on Friday.

Minister for Communications, Muhammed Shamim Siddiqui will arrive here on Thursday to attend the Saarc Ministerial meeting.

After inaugural session of the Ministerial meeting, a working session will be held to discuss the different issues in improving connectivity among the Saarc countries.

The meeting will also discuss linking the regional countries through road networks.

Pakistan delegation will comprise officials from Civil Aviation, road transport, Railways and Port and Shipping.

Meanwhile Pak-India dialogue on Wullar Barrage will be held on August 30-31 here.

The talks to be held under composite dialogue will discuss the objections raised by Pakistan on the designs and structure of the Barrage which is inconsistent to the Indus Basin Treaty.
