Tajikistan, Afghanistan to Build Hydro-Power Plant on Pyandzh River 4 August 2007: Dushanbe Rakhmon on Friday received Afghan Energy Minister Muhammad Ismail Khan, who is in Tajikistan on a three-day visit. "The parties agreed to build a 1,000 megawatt hydro-power plant to produce 4 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity annually, and they are ready to launch a feasibility study," the press service said. The World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank and the donor countries involved in the rebuilding effort in Afghanistan are expected to fund the project, it said. Afghanistan imports electricity from Tajikistan. The parties will also look for an investor for a more ambitious project to build a Dashtidzhum hydro-power plant on the Pyandzh River with a design capacity of 4,000 megawatts and annual output of 16.1 billion kilowatt/hours. The project is estimated to cost $3 billion. |
