Statement by H.E Salahuddin Rabbani Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in celebration ceremony of French National Day in Kabul (Bastille Day)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

Your Excellency Ambassador Francois Richier,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

A Very Good Evening to You All! Bonjour!

It gives me great pleasure to be here tonight– in commemoration of the French National Day.

Bastille Day marks a historic event that led to the founding of the French Republic and the emergence of a new era in French society, founded on the ideals of “liberty, equality and fraternity” for all.

Today, these universal ideals and principles are key pillars for democratic, stable and prosperous societies, worldwide.

Therefore, the significance of this Day transcends beyond France and Europe alone.

On behalf of the people and Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, I congratulate the people and Government of France on the occasion of the French National Day.

This occasion is also an opportunity to celebrate the longstanding friendly relations between Afghanistan and France.

The people and Government of France have expressed, through words and deeds, their solidarity and support for our people during some of the most difficult moments of our nation’s history.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

All present here tonight know well that France has played an essential role in the international community’s supporting efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan since 2001.

French forces have served, fought and sacrificed to advance security and development in our country.

We pay tribute to the memory of all French service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of peace and stability in Afghanistan. We are grateful for the support you have provided; we value your sacrifices and assure you that they will not be forgotten.

Yesterday’s NATO Summit Meeting on Afghanistan saw partners from the North Atlantic Alliance extend financial commitments and other support over the coming years.

We appreciate the renewed commitment of NATO partners for Afghanistan, including France, in the context of the declaration adopted on Afghanistan.

Afghanistan looks forward to enhancing our bilateral cooperation to overcoming common challenges and achieving our shared objectives.

In that light, we place high value on the imperative of continued engagement of our international partners – including France – as our national effort to defeat terrorism and achieve a secure, stable and Self-Reliant Afghanistan continues.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year, as the people of France celebrate their National Day, the French National Football team has made a great achievement by reaching the WORLD CUP FINAL.

We hope your joys of today will double with a victory in Sunday’s championship game, which will revive the good memory of the WORLD CUP 1998.

I conclude by reiterating the importance we attach to our relations and partnership with the French people and Government.

I wish to also re-convey our deep appreciation for your solidarity, support and assistance for our national endeavors.

Once again, our warmest felicitations and best wishes to the people and Government of France as you celebrate your National Day!

Monsieur l’ambassadeur,

Félicitations pour votre fête nationale!

Thank you,
