Deputy Foreign Minister Hosts Meeting with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation and Regional Countries’ Ambassadors
KABUL – Acting and Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mr. Idrees Zaman hosted a meeting with the participation of United States’ Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad and ambassadors of the People’s Republic of China, Republic of India and the Russian Federation as well as ambassadors and representatives of other countries of the region.
Extending a welcome to the participants, Mr. Zaman appreciated Dr. Khalilzad’s efforts with regards to peace and negotiations with the Taliban and called for increased involvement of the regional countries in the peace talks. Deputy Minister Zaman noted Afghanistan’s efforts in encouraging the regional countries’ further involvement in the peace process and mentioned of meetings such as the “Senior Officials Meeting of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process” and his recent trip to Islamabad which was held in the framework of ‘Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity’, as examples of such efforts.
Dr. Khalilzad also briefed the Deputy Foreign Minister and other participants on the sixth round of talks with the Taliban, noting that progress was made during his sixth round of talks with the Taliban and added, “The support of the regional countries to the process can expedite the process” and called for further coordination and cooperation of the countries of the region in the peace process.
