Newly Appointed Australian Ambassador to Kabul Called on Deputy Foreign Minister
KABUL – Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Mr. Idrees Zaman met in his office the new Ambassador of Australia to Kabul Mr. Geoff Tooth, this morning.
Ambassador Tooth, who recently presented his credentials to the Afghan President, called on Deputy Minister Zaman to discuss bilateral ties as well as issues of mutual interest and concern.
At the outset, the two sides recalled and praised the 50 years of diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and Australia.
The meeting also focused on the peace process and related issues as well as the Afghan government’s stance with regard to the talks due to be finalized between the US government and the Taliban.
Deputy Minister Zaman highlighted the regional dynamics in relation to the said process, noting that Afghanistan is committed to confidence-building among the relevant regional countries.
The Australian Ambassador reiterated his county’s support for the peace process as well as commitment to consolidating the democratic gains in Afghanistan, terming the recent security incidents as ‘disturbing’.
