Telephone Conversation between the Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan and Iran
KABUL – Mohammad Haneef Atmar, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a telephone conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E Mohammad Javad Zarif, today morning.
The call began with H.E. Mr Zarif congratulating H.E. Mr Atmar on the occasion it the 101st anniversary of the Afghanistan's independence.
Mr. Zarif conveyed Iran’s support for the Afghan Government’s decision to convene the Consultative Peace Jirga and the consensus it reached. Minister Zarif went on to express the Islamic Republic of Iran's support for peace talks between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban with an end state that would see the preservation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and its achievements of the past 19 years. Mr. Zarif once again announced his country's readiness to host the Afghan peace talks.
Both sides exchanged views on the strengthening the regional and world consensus on peace process, specifically on the need for the Taliban to reduce violence and establish a ceasefire, the release of the remaining prisoners.
The ministers spoke of strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the political, economic and security areas. They agreed on a timeline and a mechanism to finalize the comprehensive document on cooperation between the two countries, specially Khawaf-Herat railway project.
In conclusion, Mr. Atmar expressed his gratitude for the cooperation of the Islamic Republic of Iran with Afghanistan over the past 19 years and their support from Afghanistan’s peace process.
