Acting Foreign Minister Participates in SAARC Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting
KABUL – Acting Foreign Minster Mohmmad Haneef Atmar virtually participated at the SAARC Information meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers held on the sidelines of UN General Assembly. Foreign Ministers of SAARC member states welcomed the start of the Afghan Peace Negotiations, APN, and stressed the importance of the regional consensus for the success of this process.
They also discussed the fight against COVID-19 and it’s economic impacts throughout the region stressing the need for sharing experiences and knowledge, and keeping trade-transit flowing between the SAARC member states and the rest of the region, including keeping the trade and supply chains open and flowing to Afghanistan.
The Afghan Foreign Minister thanked SAARC member-states for their support to the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process. He briefed the meeting on the progress Afghanistan has made in addressing the challenges of COVID-19, and called on the participating countries to extend necessary support to Afghanistan for achieving a humanitarian ceasefire between the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban, based on the relevant UN Security Council Resolution. Mr. Atmar stressed that the humanitarian ceasefire would help enable relevant institutions of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to provide medical services to the affected communities living throughout Afghanistan.
During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers stressed the need to take necessary measure to make the SAARC more effective in delivering on its vision of a prosperous and connected region, as enshrined in its Charter.
