Acting Foreign Minister meets with the NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan

KABUL - Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Haneef Atmar met with NATO's Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo, this afternoon.

At the outset, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs commended NATO's continued cooperation and commitment to Afghanistan over the past 19 years and the Ambassador's dedication to the success of the Afghan peace process.

Referring to the recent visit by the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Kuwait and Qatar, Mr. Atmar emphasized on the importance of regional and international consensus in ensuring the success of the Afghanistan Peace Negotiations. He elaborated on the immediate need to reduce violence and establish a credible mechanism to monitor violence reduction, resulting in a ceasefire.

Ambassador Pontecorvo also echoed the call for the establishment of a credible mechanism to reduce and track violence. He further discussed the removal of hurdles to finalizing Rules of Procedures and moving on to the next stage of direct peace talks focused on establishing a humanitarian ceasefire and other key issues on the table.

In closing, Mr. Pontecorvo reassured Mr. Atmar of NATO's commitment and support to ANDSF, the peace process, and Afghanistan's democratic achievements over the past 19 years. Minister Atmar called NATO a reliable partner and appreciated the coalition's air support to ANDSF in Helmand.
