Telephone Conversation between the Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan and Egypt
KABUL – Mohammad Haneef Atmar, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a telephone call with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, H.E Sameh Hassan Shoukri, today evening.
At the outset, Minister Atmar referred to the historical, brotherly and friendly relations between Afghanistan and Egypt and expressed his gratitude for their comprehensive cooperation with Afghanistan at different times, especially during the last 19 years.
Minister Shoukri then called Afghanistan a friendly and brotherly country for the Arab Republic of Egypt. While referring to the martyrdom of Afghan students and civilians in the recent terrorist attacks, he said that the escalation of violence and the continued killing of innocent people was not in favor of peace talks. He expressed his country's support to the Afghan peace process, establishment of a ceasefire, as well as the fight against terrorism and extremism.
Both sides then discussed the importance of the Islamic scholarship in and scholars of religious community of Egypt in rectifying the peaceful role of Islam. They also exchanged views on preservation of the past 19 years gains in Afghanistan, strengthening and expanding political and security cooperation, economic and trade, cultural and educational cooperation between the two countries.
While both sides emphasized to initiate a roadmap for strengthening and expanding bilateral relations between the two countries, Minister Shoukri assured Minister Atmar of his country’s continued and close cooperation with the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. He also informed Minister Atmar of participation of a senior official of Egypt in 2020 Afghanistan Conference in Geneva next week. Minister expressed immense gratitude for Egypt supporting the Afghan Peace Process. Both sides concluded the meeting with extending invitation to each other to visit their countries, once the pandemic is over.
