Acting Foreign Minister Meets with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
KABUL - Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar met with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Mr. Filippo Grandi.
At the outset, the Acting Foreign Minister thanked the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for his continued commitment and cooperation with Afghan refugees over the past years.
Mr. Grandi then commended the recent activities of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which has began the process of identification and distribution of ID cards and passports to Afghan refugees in Iran. He added that the UNHCR was ready to support the Afghan government's such plans.
Subsequently, Minister Atmar briefed Mr. Grandi on the Afghan government's activities and programs for refugees in Iran and Pakistan, as well as the progress made for refugees in Iran.
Both sides also discussed the role of various organizations, especially the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and other institutions in the areas of migrant capacity building, immigrant integration, and send migrant labour.
In closing, Mr. Grandi briefed Minister Atmar on the safety and security of asylum seekers and refugees outside Afghanistan and stated that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, as a responsible body, would not hesitate to assist and cooperate with Afghan refugees.
