Afghan and Norway Ministers of Foreign Affairs talks over VTC
KABUL – Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Haneef Atmar, held a VTC with H.E. Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide, Foreign Minister of Norway, today afternoon.
At the outset, Minister Atmar expressed his appreciation to the government and people of Norway for their continued support and cooperation with Afghanistan over the past two decades, particularly Norway’s active role in the Afghanistan peace process.
While condemning the recent brutal terrorist attack on Kabul University, Minister Søreide expressed her sincere condolences to the families of the victims and Minister Atmar. She said that Norway continues to support the ANSDF and the peace process.
Both sides exchanged views on the potential challenges and obstacles in Doha Peace Talks, expressing their concerns over the high and unprecedented level of violence, the need to reduce violence and establish a comprehensive ceasefire, particularly during the pandemic. They discussed the need for the preservation and enhancement of the last 19 years’ achievements.
Minister Søreide said that Norway is ready to participate in 2020 Afghanistan Conference due to be held in Geneva next week, ensuring continuation of development in Afghanistan. She added that Norway is committed to supporting Afghanistan peace talks and would increase its assistance in humanitarian fields.
In closing, both sides emphasized on strengthening bilateral cooperation and discuss it while meeting in the sideline of the Conference in Geneva.
