Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets President of Estonia
KABUL – Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Haneef Atmar met with the President of the Republic of Estonia H.E. Kersti Kaljulaid in the presidential palace (ARG).
The two sides discussed and exchanged views on the prospects of achieving a political settlement, and continuation of political, economic, and security cooperation, particularly after withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan.
Minister Atmar praised Estonia’s sacrifices and continued support for Afghanistan within the framework of EU, NATO, and UNSC.
Underscoring the important role of Estonia as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in implementing the UNSC Resolution 2513, Minister Atmar stated that full realization of the resolution was crucial in securing ceasefire, success of the peace process, severing ties between the Taliban and terrorists, and maintaining the two decades’ joint achievements. The two sides discussed establishment of a mechanism for full and step-by-step implementation of UNSCR - 2513. They also assessed the prospects of continued bilateral and multilateral cooperation on combating terrorism and countering common threats.
Renewing her country’s commitments for cooperation with Afghanistan, the President of the Republic of Estonia stated that they will continue supporting Afghanistan in the new chapter of cooperation, but Afghanistan will be in the lead. H.E. Kaljulaid added that one of the main purposes of her visit was to assess future cooperation with Afghanistan.
